Location: Charghat, Baghaupazillas, Rajshahi District Donors: The Swallows (Sweden), Emmaus International Description: The program addresses some of the most pressing needs of the village. It organizes poor people in order to increase their social awareness, to create savings and provide them with microcredits. The program covers 50 villages, forming 190 groups – 17 male and 173 female ones. Together there are 3 353 program members. Every group is led by a chairman who plays the key role in communication between TSDS and the groups. Provision of the microcredit loan is the group decision. In addition to pooling their money to create savings, the people discuss social issues such as dowry, health issues and other. |
The loans serve small business and agriculture purposes – poultry, fishing, and farming. They are designated only to the needy, illiterate people who have the capacities to pay them off. First time, people get maximum Tk 5,000. The instalments are paid monthly for one year. There is small interest which is used for the program funding.
